Both girls came from a military family from Palmyra who's service goes back to the Civil War. Virginia enrolled at the Maine School of Commerce after graduating from high school and entered the military in 1943. At that time enlistment was effective for the duration of the war and six months after. She was a member of the WAVES National Maine Unit # 41 and also a member of the DAR. Eunice Millett Harper also enlisted in 1945.
The girls' brother Joseph Sewell Millett also served in WWII. Three of their uncles, Obed Francis Millett, George Gordon Millett, and Francis Davis Millett served in WWI, and four of their great uncles, Henry Ripley Millett, Obed Francis Millett, Josiah Asa Millett, and Joseph C. Millett served in the Civil War.
