At the time of the first tourist boom in the Boothbay Region (1870s and 1880s), several Penobscot families came to town each summer from Old Town to sell baskets, snowshoes, and carved wooden items.

Sockabasin family erected a tent on yard space provided to them by Boothbay Harbor resident Harold Bishop at the east end of the harbor's footbridge. The lettering on the tent spells out, "INDIAN BASKETS FOR SALE. MADE TO ORDER."
