The Hartland House, pictured on the left, was erected by Jacob Stafford, an early trader in town. In 1847, it was operated as a tavern by Mr. Joseph Brown. Over the years it went through many incarnations including tavern, hotel, boarding home for mill employes and apartment house.
In early days, a street ran behind the Hartland House alongside the Sebasticook River.
