Image Info This 1887 oil on canvas portrait of Samuel Freeman (1743-1831), a prominent Portland figure, is attributed to artist E.W.H. Brainard. It was painted after an 18th century original by an unknown artist, dated 1795. Samuel Freeman, at age seventeen, was a founder of the first public library in Falmouth Neck (now Portland), served on the Committee of Correspondence during the Revolution, and was Portland's first postmaster.
