French was born in Kezar Falls, and became interested in photography as a child. As an adult he moved to New Jersey to work for the Boy Scouts. While there, he started a business in art and commercial photography. He lived in New Jersey with his wife Margaret and two children, Donald and Barbara.
French moved back to Maine to work as the official photographer for the Development Commission. He worked for the state from 1936-1955. French was responsible for capturing photographs that promoted Maine's tourism industry.
