Thomas Edison's original light bulb used carbonized sewing thread for the filament; he was able to achieve a "perfect vacuum" by heating up the bulbs as he pumped out the air.

None of the original lamps remain; this one is a reproduction made by the General Electric Company to mark the 50th Anniversary of Edison's first successful light bulb.
