The Presumpscot River runs through Westbrook and is spanned by three bridges: the Cumberland Bridge, the Bridge Street bridge (shown in this image), and the Pride’s Corner bridge. The river was named “Presumupskeg,” meaning “many rough places,” by the Abenaki of the area. The Saccarappa and Ammonscongin Falls along the river gave rise to industry in Westbrook, providing power for grist, saw, and paper mills and spurring the growth of surrounding villages. The most land along the river has long been the most highly populated area of Westbrook.
