Image Info Wells Beach is one of numerous beaches in the town of Wells and attracts many visitors during the summer season. Beginning in the 1890s, after the nearby grand hotels had been destroyed by fires, a cottage boom evolved along the town’s beaches. Many cottages were developed along the waterfront for residents and visitors and often given family, nautical, or Native American names. The first visitors were generally wealthy families who stayed for the whole summer, but with the increasing popularity of the automobile, visitors began to use the cottages more frequently for shorter stays. Cottages were located along both sides of Casino Square at Wells Beach in the early 20th century. Many cottages in the area were destroyed during World War II.
