A Tichnor Brothers postcard of the new Colby College Campus in Waterville from around 1938. Founded in 1813, by the late 1920s the college was considering moving to Augusta for more space and newer buildings. Difficulty raising funds due to the Great Depression and a gift from the City of Waterville to encourage the college to remain in Waterville resulted in the construction of the Mayflower Hill Campus around 1930.

In 1931 Jens Frederick Larson drew the plans for the new campus. He modeled the buildings after the Georgian Revival style and the placement of the library at the center of campus was inspired by the University of Virginia. Although a model of the campus was created in 1937, construction continued into the 1960s.
