Image Info The site of Lakewood Theatre in Madison was originally a Native American settlement along Lake Wesserunsett in Lakewood Grove that was transformed in 1895 into a small amusement park and then built upon by a spiritualist group. At the close of the 19th century, Herbert L. Swett took over management of the park and added a theater addition to the hall earlier constructed by William Hayden. The first play was produced in 1901. The theater operated with a resident company format until 1961 and now hosts a wide array of productions, boasting designation as the State Theatre of Maine.
