The WWI and Civil War monuments depicted in this postcard sit in Saco’s Eastman Park at the intersection of Elm, Main, and North Streets.

The 25 foot high Civil War Monument, also known as “Victory Crowning the Returned Soldier,” was funded jointly by an anonymous donor and the City of Saco and dedicated on May 30, 1907. The bronze statue depicts the goddess of victory holding a wreath above the head of a uniformed kneeling Union Army Civil War soldier in her right hand and a flag in her left hand. The base inscription reads, “ERECTED TO THE MEMORY OF THE COUNTRY’S DEFENDERS 1775-1865.” The back of the base features a quote from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

The City of Saco later erected the WWI monument at this site. The monument is granite with a bronze plaque “in honor of those from Saco who served in the war” and features an honor roll of veterans.
