The Rockland Breakwater Light is a brick and granite lighthouse built in 1902 to join the breakwater established in the late 19th century. The breakwater was part of an effort by the Army Corps of Engineer to make the Maine coastline more easily navigable. Both the Breakwater and Breakwater Light are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Rockland Harbor has played a critical role in the economic wellbeing of the region, which long revolved around cement production, lime extraction, granite quarrying, shipbuilding, and fishing, The harbor’s broad mouth allowed storms to batter incoming vessels, leading to the establishment of the Rockland Breakwater.
