Image Info A Tichnor Brothers postcard of Monument Square in Portland from around 1938. Completed in 1891, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument (center) has served as a Memorial Day meeting place since 1892. The bronze sculpture was created by Maine's Franklin Simmons and the granite base was designed by Richard Morris Hunt.

During World War I, a small building was built in front of the statue to sell bonds and stamps to support the war effort. The building was removed following the end of the war.
The caption reads, "Monument Square looking uptown, Portland, Maine."
