An early morning fire on January 24, 1908 destroyed the Portland City Hall. The Portland records were saved, but many records from Cumberland County were destroyed. Fire companies from Saco, Biddeford, Lewiston, Auburn and Bath were called in to help fight the blaze and keep it from spreading to nearby buildings.
