Image Info

The first portion of the Maine Turnpike was the 45-mile stretch between Kittery and Portland. Built to relieve congestion on Route One, the Turnpike made vacationing in Maine by car significantly easier. It officially opened in late 1947.

The caption reads, "Maine Turnpike at York, Maine." The Tichnor Brothers printing company published this type of postcard from about 1930-1945.
