Sarah Farmer, as one of the founders of Green Acre in Eliot, Maine said, "In looking for an emblem we wanted something that would be a call to everbody, and fit everybody--and we felt that the Message that had been brought to the world by prophet after prophet was the message of Peace. The peace flag was first raised in 1894 at the Green Acre Conferences and was thirty-six feet long with green letters on a white background. It hung on an eighty-five foot flag pole that was once a ship's mast.
