Image Info Joseph F. Lovering, a native of Kingston, Massachusetts, was commissioned as chaplain of the 17th Maine Infantry Regiment on November 10, 1863, replacing Pastor Jeremiah Hayden, a Free Will Baptist, who was given a disability discharge.

Lovering had been minister of the Second Unitarian Church in Portland before joining the 17th Maine. He was mustered out on June 4, 1865, and was a clergyman in Concord, N.H., after the war.
