Township No. 6 was granted by the Massachusetts General Court in 1762 and 1763. It contained all of present-day Surry and a part of Ellsworth. In 1785 the proprietors engaged John Peters to make a survey of the Township and lay out lots. Lots 1-72 lie perpendicular to the shore of the Union River and were about one mile long where possible.

The town of Surry was incorporated in 1803. This copy of an early map shows numbered lots in township No. 6, with property owner's names written in on many of the them.

This map is oriented with north to the right.
