Image Info Township No. 6 was granted by the Massachusetts General Court in 1762 and 1763. It contained all of present-day Surry and a part of Ellsworth. In 1785 the proprietors engaged John Peters to make a survey of the Township and lay out lots. Lots 1-72 lie perpendicular to the shore of the Union River and were about one mile long where possible.
