It shows the Wadsworth-Longfellow, built in 1785-86 by Peleg Wadsworth. Stephen and Zilpah Wadsworth Longfellow added the third floor in 1815 after a fire damaged the house.
Visible in the background at right is the new home of the Maine Historical Society under construction.
Anne Longfellow Pierce, sister of the poet, gave the house and the grounds to the Maine Historical Society and stipulated that the society's headquarters be built on the site of the former barn.
The buildings are on Congress Street in Portland.
