Image Info The Portland Company was founded in 1846 and its first work was to build wood-burning locomotives for the nation's railroads. At the time of this photograph (1887) the foundrymen would have been crafting engines and boilers for steamships and tugboats, and Admiral Peary's boat the Roosevelt which was fitted for Arctic exploration with a Portland Company power plant and auxiliary machinery.
