Image Info First Lieutenant Henry A. Willis of Thomaston, enlisted in Company I of the 1st Maine Cavalry as a private on October 31, 1861 when he was 18.

He served until being discharged for disability in April 1865. He was taken prisoner at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, on May 11, 1864.
He progressed through the ranks to corporal, sergeant and finally 1st lieutenant in 1865.
This card photograph was a popular way for Civil War soldiers to share and trade images of friends.
