Uriah Balkam was the chaplain for the 16th Maine Regiment during the Civil War.

Balkam was pastor of the Congregational Church on Pine Street in Lewiston from 1855 to 1870.

In 1867, he received a honorary doctorate from Bates College. He was the Cobb Professor of Logic and Christian Evidences at Bates from 1873-1874. He died after being thrown from his horse on his way to teach a class at the college in 1874.
