Joshua L. Chamberlain (1828-1914), a Bowdoin College professor, joined the army as Lt. Col. of the 20th Maine Regiment. He became a full colonel soon thereafter.

He is famous for his regiment's crucial victory at Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg.
