Image Info

Hotel Velvet, on the corner of East Grand Ave and Old Orchard Avenue, went up in flames on August 15, 1907, along with many other famous landmark hotels in Old Orchard. Hotel Velvet was owned by Hildreth, a candy maker, famous for his "velvet" kisses, which were packaged in yellow boxes. The hotel was painted red and yellow to match. The red fire shows up as white in this photo that was reproduced from a postcard.
