Francis Sheperd (1790-1862) was a newspaper agent in Bangor in the 1840s. He is holding a letter addressed to himself, possibly to announce his presence in Bangor or identify himself for posterity.

Born in Jefferson, he first moved to Bangor and by 1851 to Portland where he opened a fancy goods store with his son, Oliver Prescott Shepherd. The store sold items such as "fine gold jewelry" and "fire proof safes."
