Originally from Salem, Massachusetts, John Porter had two sons, Greenleaf and John B. and two daughters. John Porter is probably at right, with his sons in the middle and an unidentified editor of the Rockland Gazette at left.
Porter began publishing the Lime Rock Gazette in Rockland in January 1846. The paper became the Rockland Gazette in 1851 and later merged with the Rockland Courier.
