A banner painted for the Boot and Shoe Makers group of the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association in 1841 features facing boots with the text, "He that will not pay the Shoe-Maker is not worthy of a Sole."

The reverse side reads, "Sons of Crispin, Sherman, Pendrill, Lee Gifford, Bloomfield, and a host of their Craft have laboured with their [illustration of an awl] to mend the Soles and improve the Understandings of mankind."

The banner was one of 17 created for a Triennial Festival Parade in Portland Oct. 8, 1841 to promote civic pride and to promote the skilled artisans who belonged to the Charitable Mechanic group.
