Image Info A close view of the balloon ascension featured at the Biddeford Merchants' Carnival, October 1909. The balloonist had just left the ground at 4:30 PM on October 16th. He can be seen dangling from his unopened parachute that is still attached to the balloon. The ascension took place at Pipers' Field, which was the area bounded by Elm, Mason, Union and Graham Streets. Around 1920-1921 this area was developed for residential use and Green and Wentworth Streets, which had originally stopped at Mason, were extended through it.
