This weir had a separate pound (to the right) where the freshly caught herring are transferred by opening the nets between the weir and the pound to hold the herring for a day or two until all feed is out of the herrings’ bellies and intestinal tracks. If any feed was in the herring, they would blow up in the can after sealing and being retorted (cooked). The man in the fedora hat may have been Robert J. Peacock II’s grandfather, Carroll B. Peacock, as he always wore that type of hat. The man with the bow-tie may be a Mr. Andrews.
