The Pond Block was located at the north end of the covered bridge between the Piscataquis River and the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad tracks. It was moved here from the Douglas store lot (where Griffins is currently located) in 1861 when Mr. Douglas built a new store. This view is looking southwest from Post Office Square. The entrance to the covered bridge is just out of sight on the left. The left part of the building was W.E. Jackson store which later became a barber shop for many years. The right side of the ground floor was, at one time, occupied by Henry Hudson's law office. Mr. E.T. Pond opened Guilford's first jewelry store here in 1865. Also the first drug store in Guilford was opened at this location. Mr. J.S. Williams had his law office here, at one time, and Miss N.A. Partin had a millinery shop.

Over the years many other businesses occupied the building. Underneath was Cimpher's Harness Shop. This lower area also served many purposes including a lunch counter and taxi stand. The building itself stood until 1954 when the current bridge was built. The Bangor & Aroostook Railroad tracks can be seen in the foreground. None of the structures in this photograph exist today.
