Clifford and his wife, Hazel E. Hoey, started a woodworking business in 1928. In the midst of the Depression, they produced baseball bats and snowshoes, made from white ash and cowhide and covered with hot spar varnish. Shoes sold for $5-$8 a pair. Scrap wood from the manufacture of both items were cut up and sold for lobster trap stock to local lobstermen. By 1938 the Andersons had begun to produce traps themselves; after WWII they became Anderson's main source of revenue. The trap business was moved in 1953 to Knights Lumber Mill at Crockett's Corner and at its height employed 40 people. The business closed in the 1990s.
