Image Info This ca. 1900 rare view of the area around the 1839 North Yarmouth Congregational Church captures several historic features. At left, the elms lining Walnut Hill Road are now long gone. Behind the trees, the church’s vestry can be seen; this structure, a gift from the Ladies’ Association built in 1866, burned in a dramatic fire in 1975. Far in the distance down the New Gloucester Road is the Daniel Skillin house that was struck by lightning and burned on August 20, 1917. Early 1800s deeds show sales of small land plots and refer to blacksmiths, a school, and a store near the original meetinghouse built ca. 1795, suggesting this area was the town’s earliest village center.
