Image Info

Hamilton Coal Company appears on an 1879 Kennebec County map of Hallowell and in many early waterfront photographs. The office was located at 78-80 Water Street and the coal shed extended from below the office to the Kennebec River. Hallowell Coal and Lumber Company occupied the site in the 1930s. Builder's Supply sold lumber there in the 1940s and 1950s. The office was on Water Street and the coal shed was razed to make room for lumber storage.

The State of Maine purchased the property and tore down the building in anticipation of widening Route 201 through Hallowell. The State then attempted to purchase and tear down the buildings on the east side of Water Street, but Hallowell citizens marched on the State Capital in 1975 and stopped the project. The State then swapped land with the City of Hallowell and the site is now home to a new riverside bulkhead and a partially completed public park.
