Image Info The Dorrity stagecoach is seen in front of George Stevens Academy. Such stages were important to the establishment of a regular mail service at the end of the eighteenth century. A stage route was established in 1794 that connected the coastal communities from Portland to Eastport; it passed through Blue Hill until a road was built between Bucksport and Ellsworth in 1827. An act of Congress authorized Rural Free Delivery in 1893.
