Dr. Hubbard moved to Hallowell in 1830 to practice medicine. He grew up in Readfield, graduated from Dartmouth College and received his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in Philadelphia. He established his residence on Winthrop Hill and had his office in a separate building on the property. He became involved in politics and served as Governor in the early 1850's. He is known for signing the unpopular "Maine Law" that banned the manufacture, sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages. He was the father of John Hubbard who died in battle during the Civil War. His son Thomas Hubbard donated the first addition to what is now known as the Hubbard Free Library. Dr. Hubbard died in 1869 but the family occupied the property until the 1980's.
