Image Info A step, or bearing, for the shaft of a mill-wheel. It is made of lignum vitae wood and was made in about 1840.

The bearing came rom the Watson family grist mill on Nonsuch River, North Saco. The site also is known as Thurston's Mills (the Watsons sold to Thurston).
The step was set in granite and supported the shaft of the water wheel, which revolved in a horizontal position.
