This photograph of Bath Savings Institution by Herbert Douglas only tells part of the story of Sunday, February 17, 1952. On the eleventh of the same month the State of Maine was hit by a snowstorm, particularly hard in the northern half. The almost 24-inch blizzard was labeled the worst storm in twenty years. But less than a week later, a storm, headlined as the worst since 1898, dumped over 2 feet of snow over southern Maine. Local people noted the six to eight-foot drifts and storekeepers were closed all day Monday. Many opened Tuesday, but not all. The "Bath Daily Times" wrote that barbers in the city would not be open until Thursday. On Tuesday, City Council Chairman Rodney Ross, Jr. declared all the streets in Bath closed to private automobile traffic. Much of the city's snow-clearing machinery was disabled by the amount and density of the snow, but the city was aided on Wednesday the 20th by the arrival of a large plow from the Brunswick Naval Air Station.
