She became interested in dog sledding in 1926-1927 and competitions were held at the Poland Spring resort, which her family owned.
Musher rivals Leonhard Seppala of Alaska and Arthur Walden of New Hampshire competed at Poland Spring in 1927.
Mrs. Ricker began a kennel to breed the Seppala sled dogs at Poland Spring with Leonhard Seppala.
