Image Info

This beautiful home and grounds was originally built by prominent Skowhegan businessman, Manley Pooler. Early in the 1900s, the residence was bought by Congressman Clyde Smith. Skowhegan's Margaret Chase later married Smith and after his untimely death, Mrs. Smith served in his place and later was elected to the U.S. Senate on her own merits.

The home and grounds were acquired by a group of local doctors who converted it to become Fairview hospital. Later Fairview combined with another local hospital, the Redington. The home and buildings in the picture were subsequently torn down and the site was used to build the current regional Redington Fairview General hospital.
