John Marshall Brown (1838-1907), a graduate of Bowdoin College, served in the Civil War, then joined his father's firm, J. B. Brown & Sons, managers and owners of the Portland Sugar Company.

He served on the Common Council of Portland and was a member of the School Committee.

He was involved in reorganizing the Maine militia after the Civil War and was one of the charter members of the Maine Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion.

He was the President of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument Association and delivered the dedication address for the monument.
