Image Info

This impressive Queen Ann style hotel, opened in 1882, was considered one of the finest in the Kennebec Valley. The hotel was named in honor of former Governor, Abner Coburn, who took it upon himself to find a man to build a "Creditable edifice" to replace the Brewster House which had burned on this site ten years earlier. That man was Robert Haines who operated it until it burned in 1918. The four large stores that were located at the sidewalk level were salvaged and reroofed in 1919. They continued to serve until the early 1950s when they were replaced by the Knowles and Dressel Furniture store.
