Winfield Scott (1786-1866), who helped to negotiate a settlement between Maine and New Brunswick, Canada in the Aroostook War, was promoted to major general (then the highest rank in the United States Army) as a result of his success.

He became general-in-chief in 1841, serving until 1861.

He had a great influence on the U.S. Army and served in the War of 1812, the Blackhawk War, the Seminole Wars, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War.
