Image Info The Bellanca K Romawas the fourth plane to attempt a transatlantic flight, leaving from the beach at Old Orchard. The long stretch of hard sand at low tide, along with Maine's proximity to Europe, made the beach an attractive starting point for such flights.
Show Details
The Roma left on Sept. 19, 1928. Engine problems caused the plane to return to the beach.
The flight eventually was canceled.
