Image Info This photograph is of the interior of the United States Bureau of Standards mother car for the test car that is used for testing railroad scales.
Show Details
The test car (built in 1931) as well as several 10,000-pound test weights are transported in the mother car. Generators on the mother car power electric motors on the test car to propel it.
In this photograph, weights are being loaded on to the test car in preparation for testing a Bangor and Aroostook Railroad scale. Scales were required to be accurate to within two- one hundredths of one percent (.02%) for only a 16-pound error on an 80,000 pound load.
