Arthur Schuh, who served as a Lieutenant (Junior Grade) in the United States Navy Reserve, captured this photograph of U.S. Naval activity at the Frontier base in downtown Portland, in 1944.

Identifiable vessels in the photograph include CS-302; the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey ship Lydonia; and the USS Eagle (PE-56), a World War I–era patrol boat that a German U-boat sank while it was towing targets off the coast of Maine on April 23, 1945. Initially blamed on a boiler explosion, the Navy reclassified the loss as enemy action in 2001.

Apart from his work in the Navy, Schuh was also a professional photographer and entrepreneur. Born in Quincy, Massachusetts, Schuh received his BA and MBA from Harvard and graduated in 1940.
