Image Info Shepard Cary (1805-1866) was born in New Salem, Franklin County, Massachusetts, on July 3, 1805. He was a large land owner in what became Aroostook County and a powerful figure in the logging industry.

He was a strong supporter of Maine's claims in the border dispute with Canada in what is known as the Aroostook War.
A Democrat, Cary was a member of the Maine State House of Representatives in 1832 and a member of the Maine State Senate in 1843.
He was also elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Maine's 7th District, 1844-45. Cary died on August 9, 1866.
