Image Info When Dr. Norton went missing in 1920, friends and family feared for his safety and state of mind. They distributed handbills—like the one shown here—with his photograph and description, asking the public for help. Similar announcements appeared in newspapers, and the case received widespread coverage for several years, including false discovery claims in 1923.

A jovial and kindhearted town selectman, Dr. Norton was an active community member who often allowed patients to pay when they could. Articles about his disappearance noted his struggles during the 1918-1919 Influenza pandemic. On June 22, 1920, the Bangor Daily News reported:
“He was the only physician in town [East Baldwin] and last winter went through a severe experience when an influenza epidemic prevailed and he was compelled to visit remote districts often times on snowshoes.”
Newspapers began reporting his disappearance about two weeks after he went missing, seeking public assistance and highlighting his family’s deep concern. When Norton reappeared nine years later, national outlets covered his illness, recovery, reunion with family, and the enduring mystery of why he left Maine.
