Image Info Organized in 1814 at North Bridgton, Maine, the Society for the Prevention and Detection of Crime’s objective “was the mutual protection of its members, their families, persons, and property, against thieves, burglars, and felons of every grade.”
Show Details
The group welcomed citizens from surrounding towns including Harrison, Waterford, Sweden, Denmark, Naples, and Otisfield, Maine. Membership cost $1, and both men and women could join—although women performed no duties and were subject to “assessment.” The broadside offers no details on what the assessment entailed, but notes “as yet, the latter has never been required.”.
The Society asked local postmasters to hang this notice “in a conspicuous place to remain for reference.” As with many broadsides, this item is undated.
