Image Info

This Polaroid captures the demolition of Portland's iconic Union Station in August 1961. The station opened in June 1888 and was a critical railroad hub and a central point for passenger travel in the region. Following World War II, rail travel declined due to the rise of automobile transportation. The demolition helped inspire the founding of Greater Portland Landmarks.

Though the photograph is stamped "OCT 61," the building was torn down on August 31, 1961.
