Caribou began to develop in the mid-nineteenth century thanks to logging, milling, and other activities along the Aroostook River. The community was incorporated as a town in 1859. Agriculture and the creation of the Loring Air Force Base in nearby Limestone also contributed to the town's growth. It attracted people of French descent from the St. John Valley and English speakers from other areas of the state. Caribou was chartered as a city in 1967.

After fruitless efforts to find information on this building, a family member reached out and stated, "The house in the picture was owned by Levite and Victoria Belanger. It was the original farmhouse for the Belanger farm in Caribou. They rented rooms to tourists who came to see the flowering potato plants. The house was destroyed by fire and another house was built in its place." The owners may be Vital and Victoria (Ouellette) Belanger who were living on Belanger Road in 1930 and who had two boarders at that time. They moved and eventually passed away in Connecticut.
